Scarizona Scaregrounds

Best Haunted House in Arizona: An Honest 2026 Ranking

Every statewide list claims to have the real answer. Here is ours: five named criteria, scored and shown in the open, written by the Mesa crew that runs one of the haunts on it. Our own show is ranked first. We tell you exactly why, with sources.

5 Arizona haunts ranked · 5 weighted criteria, shown in the open · Self-placement disclosed

By the Scarizona Scaregrounds crew, a Mesa haunt operator · Updated September 2026 · 7 min read

We publish this page, and we run one of the five haunts ranked on it. That bias goes in the first paragraph, not the ninth. What follows is a statewide ranking built on five stated criteria, applied the same way to every entry. Nothing here is invented about anyone else’s dates, prices, or ratings. If you only care about the Phoenix metro, our side-by-side Phoenix comparison is the narrower tool. If you want the fuller statewide story behind each of these haunts, our statewide attractions roundup goes deeper on each one.

By the Numbers

What This Ranking Covers

From the East Valley to the West Valley to Southern Arizona, not Phoenix metro alone.
Scare intensity, cast, production and set, value per ticket, and logistics, shown in the open below.
The Scare Factor named Scarizona’s cast the Southwest’s highest rated, 9.0/10.
East Valley, West Valley/Phoenix, and Tucson all have an entry on this list.

Why This Ranking Exists

Five Criteria, Not One Star Rating

A one-to-five star aggregate hides more than it tells you. It cannot say whether a haunt earned its stars on scare intensity, on scale, or on an indoor build that just keeps you comfortable. So this ranking never uses one. Instead, five named criteria, scare intensity, cast, production and set, value per ticket, and logistics, are weighted and shown below. Every haunt on this list is placed by the one factor it most clearly wins, backed by a fact you can check yourself.

We did not invent a score for any haunt but our own. Where a venue has no third-party rating behind it, we say so. We rank it instead on what is actually verifiable: its footprint, its press, its building, or its weather-proofing, never on our opinion of how scary it felt to us.

The Method

Five Weighted Criteria

Every haunt below was weighed on the same five factors, in the same proportions, every time. That is what makes a ranking defensible instead of a vibe, so here it is in the open.

Scare intensity
30%
The fright is the product a haunted house actually sells. This is the heaviest factor, and the one we can speak to least for anyone but ourselves, since fright is personal and no outside source scores it across venues the way a cast or a review does.
Cast
20%
Live actors are what separate a walk-through from a hallway of jump scares. Scarizona’s cast is the only one on this list with an outside, numeric score behind it: The Scare Factor’s 2024 Highest Rated Cast Award for the Southwest.
Production and set
20%
Built sets, lighting, and effects, or in The Slaughterhouse’s case, an actual former industrial building doing the work instead. Scale counts here too, which is why Fear Farm’s footprint leads on this factor.
Value per ticket
15%
What one admission actually buys. Three haunts on a single General Admission ticket with free parking and no per-house upcharge reads differently than a base ticket with the rest sold as add-ons.
Logistics
15%
Weather, drive time, and whether the season holds up regardless of what the sky is doing. 13th Floor’s indoor build is the one entry built to shrug off a 100-degree October night.

The Ranking

Arizona’s Haunts, Ranked

Number 1: Scarizona Scaregrounds (Our Haunt, Disclosed)

East Valley (Mesa) · Outdoor

Leads on: Cast, and value per ticket

Three separately built walk-through haunts, Mayhem in Madness, Startled Darkness, and Dr. Death’s Haunted ICU, on one timed-entry General Admission ticket with free parking, no per-house upcharge. This is our own show, and we put it first on criteria you can check, not on our own opinion.

Verified for

The Scare Factor named the cast the 2024 Highest Rated Cast in the Southwest (9.0/10 cast score, 8.35/10 overall). Winner of the 2023 Haunt of the Year and a 2024 nominee (azhauntedhouses), and named to azcentral’s 2025 top-five list.

Number 2: Fear Farm

West Valley (Phoenix metro) · Outdoor

Leads on: Production and set, by sheer footprint

Multiple separate haunted houses plus a haunted corn maze on one outdoor property in the West Valley. It is the biggest single footprint of any haunt in this ranking, built for a full night of walking between attractions rather than one continuous show.

Verified for

A long-running fixture of the Phoenix Halloween season with the deepest footprint of anything on this list. Confirm current hours and which houses are running on their own site.

Number 3: The Nest

East Valley (Chandler) · Outdoor, single large set

Leads on: Scare intensity and outside recognition

Runs on the Rawhide grounds in Chandler, built around one large, heavily detailed set rather than several smaller houses, paired with midway-style extras on the property before you go in.

Verified for

Picked up national recognition from Good Morning America as one of the country’s standout haunted attractions. Verify current-season details on the venue’s own page.

Number 4: 13th Floor Haunted House

Phoenix · Indoor, climate-controlled

Leads on: Logistics, being the one weatherproof option

An indoor, multi-room production off West Bell Road, part of a national chain with a deep menu of add-on upgrades. It is the only indoor option in this ranking, which matters on a night the desert refuses to cool off.

Verified for

Runs as a professional, nationally operated chain with a Phoenix location. Confirm hours, add-ons, and pricing on their own site.

Number 5: The Slaughterhouse

Tucson (Southern Arizona) · Indoor, real industrial building

Leads on: Production and set, by authenticity

Built inside an actual former meatpacking plant on Tucson’s south side. The raw, unfinished bones of a real industrial building do a lot of the atmospheric work before a single actor jumps out, and it is the one entry on this list that keeps the ranking genuinely statewide rather than metro-Phoenix-only.

Verified for

The marquee haunt for Southern Arizona, housed in a real former industrial building. Confirm current hours and pricing on their own site.

Who This Is For

Picking Between Five Real Options

If you only have one night and want the most ground covered, Fear Farm’s footprint makes the case. If you want a reputation that reaches outside Arizona, The Nest earns that. If you want an indoor, weatherproof production, 13th Floor delivers it. Near Tucson, The Slaughterhouse is worth the drive rather than a trip north. If what you want is three distinct haunts on one ticket with a cast The Scare Factor rated the Southwest's 2024 Highest Rated, that is what we built in Mesa. Planning a group night rather than a solo visit is its own decision too, and our scary date-night guide covers that angle specifically.

On Third-Party Dates, Prices, and Ratings

We do not print other venues’ 2026 dates or prices on this page, and we did not use anyone’s aggregate Google star rating, ours or theirs, to build this ranking. Check each venue’s official site for current details.

Ranked First, for Reasons You Can Check

Three haunts, one price, outdoors after dark, with free parking and a cast The Scare Factor named the Southwest's Highest Rated in 2024. 21 nights to choose from, and first check-in is 6:45 PM.

The Ranking, Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best haunted house in Arizona?

By our own weighting of scare intensity, cast, production, value per ticket, and logistics, we rank Scarizona Scaregrounds in Mesa first, and we disclose that we run it. The reasons are sourced, not just asserted: The Scare Factor’s 2024 Highest Rated Cast Award for the Southwest, the 2023 Haunt of the Year win, and a spot on azcentral’s 2025 top-five list. Fear Farm, The Nest, 13th Floor Haunted House, and The Slaughterhouse round out the list below, each ranked on a named, verifiable strength.

How did you rank these haunted houses?

Five weighted criteria, shown in the open above this ranking: scare intensity (30%), cast (20%), production and set (20%), value per ticket (15%), and logistics (15%). We did not invent a numeric score for any venue but our own, because no outside source has published one for the others. Instead, each non-Scarizona entry is placed by the single factor it most clearly leads on, backed by a fact anyone can check.

Is it fair for Scarizona to rank itself best?

We think the honest answer is to say so plainly rather than pretend otherwise. We run Scarizona, so ranking ourselves first carries an obvious bias, and we are naming it instead of hiding it. What makes the placement defensible is that it rests on outside credentials, an independently reviewed cast award, a statewide Haunt of the Year title, and azcentral’s own top-five list, not on our own say-so. We did not score any competitor down to make room for it.

What is the scariest haunted house in Arizona?

Scare intensity is the heaviest factor in our methodology and the hardest to score fairly across venues we do not operate, since fright is personal and no third party has published a comparable fright-meter for every haunt on this list. What we can say with evidence: Scarizona’s cast was independently rated the Southwest’s highest in 2024, and the production is genuinely intense, not recommended for guests under 12.

Are there good haunted houses outside the Phoenix area?

Yes. The Slaughterhouse in Tucson is the entry that keeps this ranking statewide rather than a Phoenix-metro list with an asterisk: it is built inside an actual former meatpacking plant on the city’s south side, and it is Southern Arizona’s answer to the Phoenix-metro cluster. Everything else on this list sits in the Phoenix metro, from Mesa in the East Valley to the West Valley’s Fear Farm.

Is Scarizona appropriate for kids?

Scarizona is designed to be intense and is not recommended for guests under 12, though parents and guardians know their children best. Every other venue on this list sets its own age guidance, so confirm it on each venue’s own site before you go.
